BIOGRAPHIE :
L’une des principales
figures de l’industrie du cinéma alors à ses balbutiements, l’acteur et
réalisateur King Baggot était le fils d’un important promoteur en immobilier de
la région de St. Louis. Désirant tout d’abord devenir joueur de base-ball
professionnel, il préféra par la suite une carrière théâtrale. Après s’être
produit dans une compagnie amateur, il obtint son premier véritable succès en
tenant le rôle principal de la production More
to Be Pitied Than Scorned.
En 1909, King Baggot se joint la compagnie Universal que dirigeait alors Carl Laemmle. Spécialisé dans les rôles virils, il se produisit aussi dans quelques adaptations littéraires tels Ivanhoe en 1912. Capable de jouer les rôles difficiles, on le voit interpréter les rôles du Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1913) ou alors dans The Corsican Brothers (1915). L’âge venant, King Baggot préféra se risquer à la réalisation. Son meilleur film demeure toujours Tumbleweeds que William S. Hart mit en vedette.
Revenu
devant la caméra, il dut se contenter de rôles de soutien (un portier dans Topaze (1933), un joueur de cartes dans Mississippi (1935), même contraint
d’accepter des petits rôles dans des sérials à faibles budgets que tournaient
alors Harry Langdon (The Big Flash, 1932).
En
1933, Baggot et plusieurs autres acteurs de l’époque du muet se virent accorder
un contrat à vie avec les studios MGM, geste symbolique de cette firme, qui ne
leur versait qu’un chiche salaire de 75 dollars la semaine. Il vivota ainsi jusqu’en 1948. Par contre son
nom fut reprit par son petit-fils, prolifique caméraman des années 70 aux années
90.
